Ministry of the Word: Know with certainty that Jesus has authority to forgive your sins!
1. Jesus' authority to forgive sins proclaimed to the paralytic (vs. Luke 5:17-20)
- Jesus faced difficult challenges, and he often withdrew to pray to God the Father.
- Our saviour knows that our greatest challenge is not physical paralysis but spiritual paralysis.
- Our sinful nature can bring feelings of shame and inadequacy.
- But Jesus brings hope.
- Jesus is not just a healer of bones, but a healer of souls.
2. Jesus' authority to forgive sins challenged by the Pharisees (vs. Luke 5:21)
- The Pharisees called Jesus a mere human, and said that he was speaking blasphemy.
- Who do you say Jesus is?
3. Jesus' authority to forgive sins confirmed by the miracle (vs. Luke 5:22-26)
- God does not listen to sinners.
- Jesus saying that "your sins are forgiven" is not possible for us to verify. But Jesus telling the paralytic to walk was immediately verifiable.
- Daniel 7:13-14. Here Daniel describes a vision that he has in which he sees the Son of man ascending into heaven, given authority over all things in heaven and on earth.
