Ministry of the Word: Remember the Sabbath

1. Background to the Sabbath

  • Sabbath was the day of rest, representing when God rested on the seventh day.
  • Today we rest on Sunday, the first day of the week, and the day on which Jesus had risen from the dead and the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles.
  • Egypt was a hell on Earth for the Israelites. After the Israelites were rescued from the Egyptians, God gave them the day of rest on the Sabbath.
  • Do we have freedom today? We are driven by the need for things. Possessions. Everyone is tired by working hard all the time.
  • A day of rest was very uncommon in biblical times, in an age of agriculture.
  • The Sabbath day was more than a day of rest, it was a sign of the covenant. It was a unique covenant blessing.
  • God gave the Israelites blessings so they did not have to work seven days a week. But he also gave them a jubilee year where they could take every seventh year off of work.

2. Fulfillment of the Sabbath

  • Jesus was the fulfillment of the Sabbath.
  • Jesus healed on the Sabbath so that those He healed could have true rest from their afflictions, and worship God.

3. Enjoying the Sabbath

  • The goal of the day of rest is to put aside work, and sports, and focus on God and your family.
  • The ministry of the gospel, and theological education are also to be prayed for and encouraged, to ensure continued ministry of the gospel.
  • Together we sing, and pray, give praise to God, and hear the preaching of the word.
  • Sunday should be a day of joy.
