  • Ministry of the Word: The Lord cuts a covenant with his people
    1. Introduction
    • It is in our nature that we want to be confident.
    • God gives us what we need to know.
    1. It is initiated by the Lord
    • Abram wants to know how he can have unshakeable faith.
    • A covenant at the time meant a promise that, if broken, would lead to death for the person that broke the covenant. Those that entered into a covenant would literally cut an animal in two, signifying that if they broke the covenant, they would be cut in half.
    • God comes to us with his covenant promise, even though we have nothing to offer him.
    • It is only through God's love, mercy, and kindness that we are blessed to have the covenant promise from God.
    1. It is fulfilled by the Lord
    • We cannot stress enough the beauty of Psalm 105.
    • Even though we fail all the time, God's covenant still stands.
    • God both gives us the covenant promise, and fulfills it for us. What a blessing!
    • The covenant is God's covenant, but it is also God's covenant with us.
    • God is faithful. God is unchanging.
