  • Ministry of the Word: Regeneration is the work of God alone
    1. The contours of this doctrine
    • Regeneration is creation, resurrection, and transplant (of the heart).
    • Regeneration is a powerful as bringing back someone from the dead.
    • God removes the heart of stone and replaces it with a heart that can have a spiritual life.
    • Salvation of true believers cannot be lost.
    • Only the elect experience regeneration, finding salvation at the cross.
    • Regeneration is mysterious. God has not revealed to us how it works, apart from the fact that it works through the gospel.
    • Regeneration is known through its effects.
    1. The challenges to this doctrine
    • Modern Armenianism claims thata we cooperate and collaborate with God for our salvation. Regeneration comes after faith not before. They say that faith results in regeneration. The Bible does not agree with this, and teaches us that we cannot have faith until after regeneration (Ephesians 2:1-2).
    • There is confusion that we are "born again" or "regenerated" every day. The Canons of Dort shows us that regeneration is a single event. Sanctification is an ongoing process, something which takes place after we have faith.
