  • Ministry of the Word: Father, lead us not into temptation, the last petition of the perfect prayer.
    1. Teach us about Satan’s deceit
    • When you are facing an opponent, it's important to know what you are up against.
    • If we are going to fight what the catechism calls the spiritual war then we need to know what we are up against.
    • We wonder why Satan strikes when we neglect prayer.
    • Sometimes we excuse our sins by saying that "we are good Christians and we try". This is no excuse for sin. We must own our sins and confess them before God.
    • If we do not own our sins, we invite further temptation.
    1. Train us to move our feet
    • It is critical that we understand our own weaknesses.
    • We must also be aware of our circumstances. Are we feeling stressed? Are we feeling under pressure? Are there challenges in our life? Are we tired or weary of dealing with someone or something in our lives? All of these things can have an impact on our ability to resist temptation.
    • James 4 tells us that if we resist Satan he will flee from us.
    • Imagine then how much more effective if we are collaborating with other Christians to resist the works of Satan.
    • Our resistance to temptation must be firm and resolute. It cannot be a half measure or Satan will find our weaknesses.
    • As Paul tells us, no temptation will be presented to us that God cannot help us resist. God will not give us more than we can bear. God will provide a way out for us; this is his promise to us. We must pray every day for spiritual strength to fight temptation.
